Lucas Kazan is at it again, adapting the basic theme, as well as the music, of a notorious Italian opera to tell his tale, this time inspired by Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci (1892). Under The Thick Top is a tale of unrequited enjoy and betrayal that concludes in tragedy, of course, but like his preceding masterpiece, A Sicilian Tale, he uses the music and the anticipation of joy, frenzy and tragedy to induce the viewer to juices in his trousers while shedding a tear. And that is a highly strange, and wonderful, sensation. The story is highly simple. Slava Petrovich is the object of everyone's wish in apany of extraordinarily handsome performers touring Italy in a circus tent. He is screwing a man actor, the stunning Pietro Rosselli, but carrying on a major side-affair with the renowned Max Orloff.
