I enjoy it when an apprentice gets within kneading distance of being accepted into the order. His instructing is essentially complete. He’s learned the rules. He knows who he is. He knows why he’s here and he knows where he’s going. And as masters, we’re really just fine-tuning him and double-checking that he’s indeed prepped for his graduation. I was paired up with Tormentor Stone to oversee Apprentice Devall’s Private Priesthood Interview and was hugely sated on both counts. I’ve seen youthfull Devall thru many of his silly seasons; the times when he was a newbie recruit with such an heavily wayward streak that we needed to extract all the stops simply to steer him back on track. These troublesome boys in my practice go in one of 2 ways; they either thrust it so far they get themselves thrown out of the order, or they pull things together and become exceptional apprentices. Devall, fortunately, fell into the latter camp. In fact, in the relatively brief period of time I’ve been in the order, I’ve not known a youthfull man who’s generated such enlivenment within the masters. It has been a superb privilege to have fun such a key role in his training.
