The blazing sun crept over the tip of the sky. Mr. Steele looked at his watch. His shift as a volunteer lifeguard at the stylish beachside resort was nearly over. Another cute, self-absorbed twink in short-shorts strolled by. Mr. Steele attempted not to stare and spinned his Ray-Bans back down over his eyes. Too late—the twink had caught the glance and snickered rudely as he ambled by. Mr. Steele sighed. Suddenly, he eyed what seemed to be frantic swinging more than one hundred yards out into the highly deep, cobalt bay waters. Mr. Steele gripped his binoculars and scanned the area. What he eyed dazed and dismayed him—a young person who had swum out past the bright-orange caution buoys. Mr. Steele launched himself from the lifeguard’s stool and instantaneously dove into the water. A previous Marine, he was still as busy and spry. A binding man, still highly capable of heavy corporal activity as he’d been as a junior fellow in the service. Soon, Mr. Steele had reached the flailing twink and gripped the fellow by the scruff, pulling him away from the strenuous current—just in time. Once safely back on the beach, Mr. Steele held the shuddering fellow close and asked him his name. Still seemingly in a state of shock from nearly getting pulled away forever by the ocean current, the twink could only view up at the worried lifesaver’s face, quiver and gape. Finally, the fellow regained composure just enough to suggest a powerless peep that his name was Dex.
